Summary
The following steps detail how to hang an interior
door:
1 Trimming the door
2 Marking the hinge positions
3 Working round the hinge mark
4 Starting chiselling
5 Removing waste
6 Positioning the door
7 Chiselling the frame recesses
8 Testing the swing of the door
9 Securing the door
Tools
Tape measure, chisel, mallet, pencil, door wedges.
Materials
Cardboard strips, door hinges, screws, door
Step 1 - Trimming the door
Trimming the door to fit the frame will involve
holding the door against the frame several times
while measurements are made. It is recommended that
you have someone assist you with this process.
Step 2 - Marking the hinge positions
Interior doors are hung using two hinges while
exterior doors use three. Measure the hinges and
take note of their dimensions. The top hinge is
placed 175mm from the top of the door. The bottom
hinge is placed 225mm from the bottom. If applicable,
the middle hinge is placed halfway between the two.
Place the hinges in position on the door and mark
their perimeters.
Step 3 - Working round the hinge mark
The hinge fits between two recesses in the door and
frame, half into the door and half in the frame.
Using a chisel and a mallet, work round your marks
carefully making cuts to the same depth as half the
hinge.
Step 4 - Starting chiselling
Make a series of cuts in the door to the correct
depth. Be careful to only cut at a shallow angle and
remove the wood in thin slivers rather than trying
to remove the whole depth of the hinge in one cut.
If you attempt this, it is likely that you will split
the wood deep into the door.
Step 5 - Removing waste
You should now chisel out the waste wood. Use the
hinge to check itÆs a tight fit. Repeat this process
for the other hinges. Attach the hinges to the door
with a single screw.
Step 6 - Positioning the door
Using two door wedges, position the door to the height
you determined when you were trimming the door to fit.
Mark the position of the hinges on the frame, remove
the door and draw the hinges on the frame in the same
dimensions you noted earlier.
Step 7 - Chiselling the frame recesses
Use the same method as before to chisel the frame
recesses you have just marked.
Step 8 - Testing the swing of the door
Insert one middle screw into the top and bottom
hinges. You can now test the swing. If one side of
the door rubs the frame the recesses may not be deep
enough. If the door will not close, one may be too
deep. Remove the door and chisel out more wood or
insert thin cardboard strips as appropriate.
Step 9 - Securing the door
Insert the rest of the screws once you are happy with
the swing.
